Night view of Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge
under constructionThe 1,385m span Jiangyin Yangtze River
Highway Bridge is a world class engineering structure realised
through the collaboration of Chinese and UK engineers.
We provided specialist advice on construction management to the
Department for International Development, UK and Jiangsu Provincial
Communications Department (JPCD) for the 1,385m span Jiangyin
Yangtze River Highway Bridge. This followed our assistance to the
Chinese authorities in concept design, planning and procurement
plus independent design analysis and checking.
The bridge takes the form of a streamlined steel box
girder deckJiangyin Bridge, which was completed in 1999,
carries a dual three-lane highway across the Yangtze River between
the towns of Jiangyin and Jinjiang in Jiangsu province, replacing a
busy ferry service. The bridge provides the only fixed crossing of
the Yangtze River for the 350km between Shanghai and Nanjing and
forms part of the planned north-south coastal trunk road connecting
the provinces of Heilongjiang and Hainan. The bridge takes the form
of a streamlined steel box girder deck supported by cables
constructed of preformed parallel wire strands and 193m high
concrete towers. A shipping clearance of 50m allows the passage of
Panamax cargo vessels.
We provided specialist advisory services to JPCD’s project
management team on all aspects of construction management. These
included project and contract management, site supervision,
offshore manufacture, quality management, social development,
environmental management, site and road safety. Technical advice
was given on both civil and electrical engineering aspects.
Structured training was an important element of the commission with
our staff working with JPCD in an integrated team.
