Aerodynamics

The design of wind susceptible bridges requires an in-depth understanding of all aerodynamic aspects, which must be addressed during the design and construction phases of a project. Our specialists have a vast range of skills in this area and our bridge designs have operated in both temperate, monsoon and typhoon climatic conditions. In particular, we originated the vented box girder approach which has been used successfully in the typhoon environment of Hong Kong, where gust speeds are in excess of 330km/h.

Taut stripTaut strip model testingWe have experience in the following types of wind tunnel testing:
  • Terrain
  • Sectional
  • Taut strip
  • Aeroelastic
  • Cable stay
CFD Stonecutters bridgeCFD simulation for Stonecutters bridgeIn wind tunnel testing we understand the technical specifications required for the construction of models plus the applied wind effects. This includes an assessment of the model scale and the determination of the frequency regime.

We have enhanced our aerodynamic capability by developing in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, enabling us to investigate the preliminary performance of deck sections in fluid flow prior to testing in the wind tunnel.

Some projects where the design required wind tunnel testing to be undertaken included:

Suspension Bridges
  • Tsing Ma Bridge, Hong Kong
  • Tsing Lung Bridge, Hong Kong
