Bridge architecture

In addition to serving structurally bridges have a major aesthetic presence. Consideration of bridge architecture for new designs and the renovation of existing structures go hand in hand with structural engineering. Our engineers take pride in producing designs with appropriate visual impacts, whether it is to create a striking visual statement or to develop an unobtrusive structure which blends into its environment.

View of the Rama VIII Bridge on the opening dayRama VIII Bridge, ThailandWe regularly work with architects, and have established relationships with several firms with strong track records in bridge architecture. This is vital because the architecture and structure are one and the same and the visual and structural design must be developed together.

Among our portfolio of major bridges with a major visual presence, we are particularly proud of:
  • Rama VIII Bridge, Bangkok
  • Tsing Ma Bridge, Hong Kong
  • Industrial Ring Road Bridges, Bangkok
  • Redheugh Bridge, UK
  • River Luznice Bridge, Czech
BridgeThe Green Bridge at Mile EndA design at the other end of the spectrum is London's Green Bridge, which carries Mile End Park over a busy road and is so unobtrusive it is almost invisible. Green Bridge won several awards for its innovative design and sensitive integration with the surroundings. Another award-winner for restrained bridge architecture, within a sensitive rural setting, is Itford Farm Bridge.

We respect our bridge architectural heritage. Mott MacDonald is working together with English Heritage to renovate Stephenson’s famous High Level Bridge in Newcastle, UK, built in 1850.
