Tower Bridge, UK
Movable bridges are a specialist area of engineering. Our
experience enables us to offer a complete range of services from
feasibility studies, detail design and specification to
construction supervision and inspection to commissioning and
project management.
We have experience of many different drive systems to cater for the
various types of movable bridges including swing, lifting and
bascule types. Examples of drive systems which we have designed and
commissioned include roller chain drives for swing bridges, winch
drives for lifting bridges and hydraulic power cylinder drives for
bascule bridges. However, the choice of the most suitable drive
system and power source is considered for each particular
application to achieve the required operational performance and
ensure long term reliability and ease of maintenance.
Notable movable bridge projects include:
- Thames Crossing at Blackwall, UK – feasibility study for
a road crossing to provide
Mutford Bridge, UK150m navigation opening
- Tower Bridge, UK – detailed
inspection and strength assessment including repair and replacement
of sections of carriageway deck
- Mutford Bascule Bridge, UK – a wide
variety of associated engineering work including dredging, approach
roads, a railway level crossing and a separate timber bascule span
over the lock for pedestrians
- New Galata
Bridge, Turkey – design check and
supervision for a fixed crossing of the Golden Horn in Istanbul.
The bridge has an overall length of 470m with a central
hydraulically powered 4 leaf bascule opening section that provides
a navigation width of 80m
Canary Wharf, UK
- Canary Wharf, UK – design and
construction supervision of twin single leaf bascules with 23m
cantilever and a four 30m span composite steel and concrete viaduct
on piled foundations
- Havengore Bridge, UK – design,
specification and liaison during construction. The 310m long bridge
provides for two lanes of traffic and 14 concrete viaduct spans
connected by a single leaf bascule bridge of 19m clear span
